Alanna Kennedy’s Path to the Women’s World Cup
For 28-year-old Alanna Kennedy, making it to the Women’s World Cup is huge. After facing a tough road, getting back on the field means everything. During her recovery, she turned to the Matildas’ head physiotherapist, Jaclyn Benz, for help. She even asked things like, What bone broth should I use? Those ridiculous voice notes kept coming as she worked hard to be ready for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

The Recovery Journey
Kennedy pushed herself to come back after a string of injuries. Even though she hadn’t played since early February, she made it onto Australia’s squad to face teams like Canada, the Republic of Ireland, and Nigeria. When she learned she made the cut, she couldn’t hold back her tears. “I was emotional, I cried. I don’t think I’ve ever cried being picked for a team, but I cried on my own later in the day,” she said. This selection meant so much more to her.
Facing Injuries
Her recovery wasn’t easy. There were times when uncertainty weighed on her. “There definitely was a moment where I felt really stressed. It’s hard when you can’t share everything,” she explained. While people speculated about her health, she stayed focused on getting better. She dealt with multiple injuries, including a hamstring strain and a shoulder fracture.
Challenges of Rehab
Rehabilitation was tough and lonely. “Rehab can be really lonely,” she shared. Her family and the medical team stepped up to support her. “My mum is someone I talk to all the time, but sometimes I just don’t want to share everything,” she said. Daily chats with Jaclyn and others helped her emotionally.
Hope for the World Cup
Kennedy was always confident she would make it back for the World Cup. Playing at home in front of family and friends was an amazing chance. I would never give up on myself like that, she said. After facing ups and downs, her determination grew stronger. “It has been a tough few years, but I was never going to give up on my World Cup path.”
Looking Ahead
Now, it’s still unclear what role Kennedy will have with the Matildas, especially with new players like Clare Hunt joining the team. But she’s ready. My friends and family are here, and the whole of Australia can come to watch. There are so many positive things,” she said, excited to help her team succeed.
