The implementation team for USAID’s Ghana Justice Sector Support Activity paid a courtesy call on Mr Patrick Missah, Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service.
The visit is part of an attempt to educate more people of the criminal justice system about the critical role of the Case Tracking System (CTS) in improving Ghana’s efficiency in providing justice.
The Legal Resource Centre, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, and the Crime Check Foundation served as implementation collaborators.
The USAID-funded project establishes a forum for Ghanaians to interact with the Prisons Service, a key part of Ghana’s criminal justice system.
Mr. Missah shared his delight at the advent of CTS technologies to assist in the delivery of justice.
He stated that the Prisons Service will work with the team and other civil society groups to enhance the implementation of justice in Ghana.
Ms Daphne Nabila Lariba, Executive Director of the Legal Resource Centre, stated that the staff will work effectively with the Prisons Department and other justice system agencies to ensure that violations of the legislation governing detention and processing of prisoners is minimized whilst also increasing the use of paralegal facilities and alternative conflict settlement processes.
The Government initiated the country’s first comprehensive CTS in 2018, in cooperation with the Judicial Service, the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Department, the Legal Aid Commission, the Economic and Organized Crime Office, the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Prisons Service.
Ghana’s CTS facilitates inter-agency coordination and intelligence exchange through an automated case management mechanism in order to assist the GOG in successfully solving and prosecuting crime cases.
The CTS serves seven regions: Greater Accra, Ashanti, Northern, Bono, Upper East, Volta, and Western.
Thus, the USAID Justice Sector Funding activity aims to increase stakeholder use of the CTS and to assist civil society organisations and individuals in advocating for increased oversight of core justice sector agencies in order to facilitate justice delivery.
