The speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has expressed worry over the lack of a proper security and safety plan prior to the Akosombo Dam Spillage.
He said the manner in which the spillage which has caused the loss of properties running into millions of cedis and displaced several individuals within the affected districts is disturbing.
Delivering his opening address on the floor of parliament during the commencement of the third meeting of the third session, he assured of the house’s commitment to probe into the flood incident and to seek everlasting solutions to it.
He added that parliament will inquire into the matter and make the necessary recommendations for the protection of properties and lives living in the affected areas.
He emphasized saying “It is unacceptable that an activity as potentially destructive as a dam spillage was done without a well thought through security and safety preparedness plan.”
Hon. Alban Bagbin used the opportunity to appeal to all the members of parliament to offer their maximum support to their colleague MPs whose constituents have been affected by the spillage.
He further called on the government to increase its relief and all other efforts for the victims of the spillage while assuring that parliament will play its part in supporting the affected communities.
However, the Minority Leader of Parliament, Dr. Casiel Ato Forson pledged his side’s determination to petition the house for a committee of enquiry into the spillage and any other matter connected to the incident.
He, therefore, served notice that “we will present a motion to demand the parliamentary inquiry into the circumstances that led to a man-made disaster of such magnitude.”
