Daniel Ofori, the taxi driver who drove a police officer on his bonnet for 300 meters, was sentenced to two years in jail by the Koforidua Circuit Court B.
Daniel Ofori, 37, was sentenced to six months in prison on count one for hazardous driving in violation of Section 1 of the Road Traffic Act, 683, and 24 months in prison on count two for resisting arrest in violation of Section 226 (1A) of the Criminal Offences Act 1960. (Act 29).
Both sentences will run at the same time.
The court presided over by Her Ladyship Mercy Addei Kotei, also suspended his driver’s license for a period of five years.
On February 28, 2020, the event that triggered Mr. Ofori’s problems occurred.
Mr. Ofori was shown driving at high speeds in a cab with a police officer hanging onto his bonnet in a widely distributed video on social media.
The prosecutor, Inspector Geshon Dafeamekpor, told the court that the taxi driver, who was being monitored by the police MTTD for other road traffic violations, was spotted at the Galloway traffic and ordered to park, but he refused and drove away with Sergeant Asante Peprah, who jumped on the bonnet to avoid being run over by the taxi driver.
Daniel Ofori, on the other hand, was forced to come to a halt when another motorist obstructed his way, resulting in his detention.
DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, who represents the police in the Eastern Region, thinks the sentence would serve as a warning to future disobedient drivers.
“This is a warning to other drivers, especially the recalcitrant ones whose attitude and demeanor on the road is repugnant not only to road traffic users and law enforcement officers but even to pedestrians.”
