British-Ghanaian rapper Stormzy is set to receive an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Cambridge, recognizing his significant philanthropic efforts and contributions to various fields, including education, music, sport, and literature.
The artist, whose full name is Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., has been nominated for this honorary degree due to his exceptional charitable work.
Acknowledgment of Philanthropy and Social Impact
The university’s official statement highlights that the honor is conferred “in recognition of his philanthropic endeavors and influence in education, music, sport, and literature.”

Stormzy has been a strong advocate for educational equity, especially for Black students in the UK. In 2018, he launched the Stormzy Scholarship, which supports two Black British students at Cambridge each year by covering tuition and maintenance costs.
In 2021, HSBC UK expanded the initiative, committing to fund an additional 10 students annually. To date, the Stormzy Scholarship has helped 55 students, with the largest group set to graduate this year.

Cambridge noted that the “Stormzy effect” has significantly encouraged more Black students in the UK to apply to the university.
Ceremony Scheduled for June
Stormzy, along with seven other nominees, has accepted the University Council’s recommendation for honorary degrees, pending final approval from the Regent House, the university’s governing body.
The degrees are expected to be officially awarded during a special ceremony at the Senate House on June 25, presided over by Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice, with attendance from university staff, students, alumni, and invited guests.
