Nigerian media personality Toke Makinwa recently announced that she is expecting her first child, a revelation that has sparked both celebration and debate online. While many of her fans and colleagues showered her with congratulatory messages, her announcement has also drawn criticism from life coach and social commentator Solomon Buchi, who expressed discomfort with the way Makinwa framed her news around her faith.

Buchi, known for his outspoken views on morality and religion, acknowledged the significance of Makinwa’s pregnancy—especially as she approaches 40—but took issue with her decision to attribute the milestone directly to God.

“I’m happy that Toke is having a child at almost 40; it seems it’s something she really desired as a woman, but I have a problem with mixing Jesus and God with it,” Buchi said.

“We really need to be very careful how we mix God with our personal decisions. You are having a child outside of wedlock, there is no need bringing God into that, spiritualizing it. Honestly, you can give your testimony without infusing God into it because according to God’s standard, the only right way to be a parent is in the premise of marriage.”

His comments followed Makinwa’s emotional Instagram post, where she described her pregnancy as her “biggest project” and “highest calling.”

In her announcement, Makinwa reflected on her long journey to motherhood, sharing that the year had brought a remarkable turnaround in her life.

“Dear God, you did this one, you have completely changed my life. You opened this door that nobody can shut,” she wrote.

“I didn’t understand why it took so long but now I see it. You worked on my heart posture to get me ready for the biggest blessing and the highest calling.”

She also penned heartfelt words to her unborn child:

“My bug, I cannot wait to meet you. You’ve made me the happiest person on earth… The answer to my prayers, this whole journey has given me life.”

The announcement, which quickly went viral, has since stirred conversations on social media, with many praising Makinwa for her honesty and resilience, while others echoed Buchi’s concerns about the spiritual framing of pregnancies outside marriage.

Makinwa, a celebrated talk show host, author, and entrepreneur, has often been candid about her struggles and triumphs in both career and personal life. Her latest revelation adds a new chapter to her public journey, one that continues to polarize opinion in a society where religion, culture, and modern lifestyle choices often intersect—and clash.

For Buchi, the debate goes beyond Makinwa’s personal story to a broader question about how faith is applied in personal narratives. His comments reflect ongoing tensions in Nigerian society, where traditional religious values sometimes stand at odds with evolving social realities.

As Makinwa prepares for motherhood, her journey has already ignited a larger national conversation: Can personal choices—particularly those outside traditional norms—be celebrated while still invoking God’s hand?
