The National Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana, George Ansong, has announced a nationwide strike action starting today, Monday, September 16, 2024.
This decision follows the government’s failure to fulfill its commitments regarding allowances and a 5% increase in tier two pension payments.
In a statement on Adom FM, Mr. Ansong explained that all senior staff members are instructed to cease work until their concerns are addressed.
The strike is a response to the government’s lack of action despite previous protests and negotiations aimed at improving service conditions and government’s failure to meet the September 16 deadline for implementing agreed-upon demands.
The association’s members will withdraw all services across public universities, including administrative offices, libraries, hospital facilities, and security personnel, starting today.
Mr. Ansong highlighted that government has not honored promises related to vehicle maintenance allowances, tier two pension deductions, and recalculation of pension interests.
Despite a previous industrial action in January 2024 and assurances from the government, the issues remain unresolved.
The statement concluded with a directive for all member campuses to adhere strictly to the strike order, with the national leadership refusing to call off the action until their demands are met.
