Leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) has ordered its members to completely withdraw their services with immediate effect.
The laying down of their tools is to compel the government to pay the 20% Cost of Living Allowance (CoLA) as demanded by other labour Unions.
This brings to five, the number of unions on strike over the demand for the CoLA.
At a joint press briefing with the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) on July 13th, 2022, the National Chairman of the Association, Isaac Donkoh emphasized saying “With this particular strike, we will not exempt any staff. Teaching staff, you are going home. Principal staff, you are going home. Drivers, you are going home.”
He noted that it is important members comply with this directive until government responds to their demand for the CoLA.
The leadership also indicated that they find the threat by the Chief Executive Officer Ing. Benjamin Arthur of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to withhold all salaries of Senior Staff should they embark on strike action as “intimidating and also an affront to the position he occupies as a public officer who preaches equity and therefore practices none”.
“We are daring him on his claim. The unprofessional conduct of his actions and continuous absence of GTEC and VCG from our negotiations have even triggered our resolve to call for strike action” he emphasized.
Aside from the CoLA the association is also demanding government to pay among other things, the accrued interest on tier 2 pension arrears from 2010-2016, and also extend generic allowances to all Senior Staff of Public Universities in Ghana.
They are also calling on Public Universities Management to regularize the appointment of temporal and casual staff working over six years.
