The Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, has voiced his extreme dissatisfaction with the way he was treated in connection with the bungled acquisition of Sputnik V vaccines.
According to him, the deal shattered his personality.
Mr. Agyeman-Manu said this on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, during the discussion on the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy.
He said that he was chastised for attempting to get vaccines promptly in order to assist Ghanaians in vaccinating against the COVID-19 disease.
“Mr. Speaker, I am so amazed. When I was rushing to get some vaccines to do vaccinations quickly to meet our development targets, I was found culpable of not coming to Parliament and I was lambasted to the extent that now I don’t have any image in this country,” he said.
His remarks were in response to a statement made by Juaboso Member of Parliament Kwabena Mintah Akandoh to the effect that the administration had failed to fulfill its own vaccination objective.
Mr Akandoh said that the government has vaccinated 2.5 million individuals as of October 2021, falling short of the aim of 17 million for the same period.
It should be noted that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly’s 76th session on Wednesday, September 22 that Ghana was aiming to achieve the objective of vaccinating twenty million people by the end of 2021.
“Five million is not a figure to be sneered at, particularly when we consider the situation in many other African countries. We are grateful that our efforts at the management of the pandemic and vaccine distribution have been recognized, and we have received these amounts so far. We are still hoping to vaccinate twenty million of our people by the end of the year,” he said.
