Spotify has explored various voice interfaces in the past and recently introduced an AI DJ that suggests music and accepts user requests. Now, during its second-quarter earnings call with investors, Spotify hinted that advancements in generative AI could lead to a more conversational interface in the future.
When asked about AI’s impact on the business, Spotify’s Chief Product and Technology Officer, Gustav Söderström, noted that users can now communicate with Spotify in plain English to request songs, enabling the company to link specific phrases with corresponding tracks.
“This gives us a new dataset,” he explained. “Spotify has a unique collection from playlists that connects songs, much like Amazon’s ‘people who bought this also bought’ feature.” The voice interface is providing valuable new insights for the company.
Söderström added that users can expect Spotify’s consumer experiences to become “much more interactive.” He stated, “You can already write to Spotify and talk to it; that’s going to expand.”

With AI technology, Spotify aims to enhance its ability to predict user preferences for music, podcasts, and audiobooks. This includes employing reasoning models that can undertake more complex tasks based on listening history and user interactions with the AI DJ.
The voice data comes from Spotify’s AI DJ feature, which was introduced in May 2025, allowing Premium subscribers to make voice requests to change music, genres, or moods.
Spotify is also leveraging generative AI internally to accelerate product development and improve efficiencies across various business areas, including finance.
In the last quarter, Spotify reported 276 million paying subscribers, a 12% increase year-over-year, and 696 million monthly active users, though it incurred a loss after missing revenue targets. The stock dropped 10% following weak guidance and CEO Daniel Ek’s concerns about the advertising business.
