Spain star slams criticize EURO 2025 squad selection after shock omission
Spain star slams criticize EURO 2025 squad selection after Jenni Hermoso was surprisingly left out of Montse Tome’s squad for the tournament in Switzerland. The 35-year-old forward, who played a vital role in Spain’s qualification campaign, expressed her disappointment and frustration through a pointed social media post following the squad announcement. Hermoso’s exclusion came despite her consistent involvement during the qualifiers, and she hasn’t appeared for the national team since October.

Controversial history and social media reaction
Hermoso became a symbol of resistance and justice after the infamous non-consensual kiss from then-Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales following the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final. Her pursuit of accountability led to legal action, and Rubiales was later found guilty of sexual assault. Hermoso’s relationship with the federation remained strained afterward. Upon hearing she wouldn’t be heading to EURO 2025, Hermoso posted a cryptic but cutting message on X, saying, “I truly have a clear conscience, too, and even more so when I remove environments with such bad energy from my life.” She added sharp criticism, suggesting some people weren’t fit for management roles and hinted at a toxic environment within the team setup. “I’m tweeting because it’s the only way left to have a ‘conversation,’” she wrote, also stating, “They could probably do it better without me.”
Coach Tome defends decision
In response to the brewing controversy, Spain head coach Montse Tome tried to ease tensions by highlighting the depth of talent in Hermoso’s position. “I understand Jenni is an important player. I spoke with her about her situation,” Tome explained. She emphasized that the coaching staff had carefully evaluated Hermoso’s performances at Tigres and also consulted with her club coach. Tome defended the selection process, naming several top-tier midfield and attacking options like Patri Guijarro, Aitana Bonmati, Alexia Putellas, Maite Zubieta, Vicky Lopez, and others who could play similar roles. “It’s hard to pick 23 players, but we do the job professionally,” she concluded.
Spain eyes first EURO title
Despite the controversy, Spain enters the tournament as favorites to win their first-ever Women’s European Championship after their World Cup triumph. They will open EURO 2025 with a match against Portugal, with all games available live on Optus Sport in Australia.
