Some customers of the country’s telecommunications networks are urging the government to extend the deadline for SIM card re-registration.
Long lines have formed at several telecommunications carriers’ service centers as users race against the clock to connect their Ghana cards to their SIM cards.
This is due to the government’s March 31, 2022, deadline for re-registration.
According to several Ghanaians interviewed by Citi News, an extension might help relieve tensions at the numerous re-registration centers.
They also expressed dissatisfaction with the amount of time it takes to register a person.
“A lot of people have just been rushing here, but I think if there are a lot of people who do the registration, it will help because they spend almost 45 minutes to one hour on one person,” one of the aggrieved customers said.
“Just look at the number of people who have massed up, and this is making the exercise very chaotic and unregulated. I think an extension will ease the tensions to enable everyone to get his SIM card registered,” another customer lamented.
Meanwhile, others believe the procedure is unnecessary since they provided biometric information while applying for the Ghana Card.
Though it is unknown what is causing the long queues, Citi News sources claim the system offered by Kelni GVG to assist the exercise has been plagued with difficulties.
The long queues have also been linked to the telecoms’ restricted number of branches for the exercise.
