Dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., popularly known as Shatta Wale, has been detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in connection with an ongoing investigation into the tax obligations and ownership of his luxury yellow Lamborghini Urus.
In a statement released by his management, the award-winning artiste reportedly voluntarily reported to EOCO offices in Accra on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, accompanied by his lawyer, Cephas Biyuo. His team emphasised that the move was not a forced arrest but part of a cooperative effort with investigators.
Shatta Wale’s management has since appealed to his global fan base, popularly known as the “SM Family”, urging them to remain calm and avoid speculation while the legal process unfolds. They assured fans that the artiste’s legal representatives are “actively working with authorities to secure his release” and that discussions with EOCO are ongoing.

Background to the Case
The detention comes on the heels of a high-profile seizure earlier this month. In early August 2025, EOCO, working in collaboration with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), impounded the luxury vehicle, which was alleged to have been stolen abroad and linked to the proceeds of an international fraud scheme.
Authorities argue that the vehicle’s entry into Ghana raised serious compliance and legitimacy concerns, particularly regarding import duties and ownership documentation. The seizure was carried out under the powers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office Act, 2010 (Act 804) and the Mutual Legal Assistance Act, 2010 (Act 807), laws that give EOCO the mandate to seize properties suspected to be linked to criminal activities—even when the original crime was committed outside Ghana.
As part of its work, EOCO regularly collaborates with international bodies such as INTERPOL and the FBI in cross-border cases involving money laundering, fraud, and other organised financial crimes.

Public Reaction
News of Shatta Wale’s detention has set social media abuzz, with fans, industry stakeholders, and critics voicing strong opinions. Some sympathisers believe the artiste is being unfairly targeted because of his celebrity status, while others argue that the case highlights the need for greater accountability among public figures.
In a message on social media handle, Facebook, Artiste Manger for Shatta Wale, Samuel Atuobi Baah popularly known as Sammy Flex explained that the “Ayoo” hitmaker presented himself voluntarily to EOCO accompanied by his lawyer, Cephas Biyuo and would be back today, Thursday, 21st August 2025 to continue with proceedings.
The outspoken musician, known for his controversial persona and massive following, has long been a lightning rod for public debate in Ghana’s entertainment industry. His legal challenges have only added to his reputation as one of the country’s most polarising stars.

What’s Next
For now, Shatta Wale remains in EOCO’s custody as legal deliberations continue. His team has confirmed they will return to EOCO offices in the coming days to resolve the matter.
Meanwhile, music lovers and the SM Family will be watching closely as one of Ghana’s biggest music exports navigates this latest storm—one that blends the glamour of celebrity with the hard realities of international criminal law.
