Despite a “fruitful” meeting with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the National Labour Commission on Wednesday, June 9, 2021, the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana is still on strike.
Three weeks ago, the union called an indefinite strike over the government’s inability to pay its members’ Tier 2 pensions.
Members of the association are also requesting that market premium and non-basic allowance be awarded, as well as the completion of discussions on their service conditions.
The National Labour Commission and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) were forced to meet with them on June 9 to discuss their issues.
In an interview with Citi News, the Association’s National President, Zakaria Mohammed, indicated that although the meeting went well, the National Executive Committee has yet to decide on the next course of action.
He claims that the strike will continue until an official announcement to the contrary is published.
“I must add that the conversations were quite beneficial, which is only one of the ways in which we and the administration can resolve difficulties. They weren’t trying to figure out who was right and who was wrong; instead, they were seeking for methods to solve the issues that had been raised.”
“However, we have yet to advise the National Executive Council on the developments that occurred between us and the team, and then release a statement to let the NLC and FWSC know our stance at the meeting. Until it is conveyed, our strike will continue.”
