Fire razed portions of the Mankessim market in the Mfantsiman Municipality of the Central Region, destroying properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis.
The fire began at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, according to sources.
To put out the fire, firefighters were dispatched late at night.
While the cause of the fire is unknown, some market participants believe it was caused by an electrical fault.
The incident could have been avoided if the Mfantsiman Municipal Assembly had delivered fire extinguishers to the market, according to Samuel Kofi Baiden, assembly member for the Nkusukum electoral district.

“This is the first time I’ve seen a fire break out in this area. It’s the first time it’s happening. The Municipal Assembly of Mfansteman should have taken the initiative. We should have given fire extinguishers to the security officers.”
This incident occurs just days after a fire engulfed the administration block of the Asante Mampong College of Education in the Ashanti Region’s Asante Mampong Municipality.
Some sheds and shops were also destroyed in separate fires at the Sokoban Wood Village and the Kumasi Central Market.
