National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, , has sharply criticized President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia’s government, attributing Ghana’s current socio-economic difficulties and corruption issues to their policies.
In a statement made during the NDC’s “Moment of Truth” series, Mr. Gyamfi painted a bleak picture of Ghana’s economic landscape, criticizing the administration for awarding contracts through sole-sourcing to companies like Access Limited, totaling GH₵83 million, rather than through competitive bidding.
He accused government officials of misappropriating state resources meant for productive use, which has exacerbated poverty and hardship in the country stating that the rampant corruption and mismanagement under this government have led to widespread suffering.
Mr. Gyamfi highlighted the increasing desperation among Ghanaian youth, who are seeking to leave the country, a trend he named as “JAKPA.”
“Ghanaians are facing severe economic difficulties, including a depreciating currency, soaring food prices, and unprecedented unemployment rates,” he noted. He referenced a recent Afrobarometer survey to underline the growing disillusionment among the populace.
“The current administration has plunged our nation into unprecedented levels of hardship,” Mr. Gyamfi said. “We are experiencing economic bankruptcy, an alarmingly high cost of living, and crippling taxes, which have made life unbearable for many.”
He also criticized the government for its handling of sole-sourced contracts, which he claimed are “overpriced and dubious”, remarking that these practices are a stark contrast to promises made by Akufo-Addo and Bawumia when they were in opposition.
“They condemned sole-sourcing and vowed to end it, but now it has become the norm,” he added.
Reflecting on past promises, he quoted Bawumia’s September 2016 tweet accusing the previous administration of overpricing contracts through sole-sourcing.
Sammy Gyamfi concluded, stating that, “Despite their promises, the current administration has only perpetuated the corruption they once condemned.”
