The lead sponsor of the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, Sam George, has expressed frustration over the Supreme Court’s delay in hearing two crucial cases related to the bill.
He believes that the cases filed by Amanda Odoi and Richard Dela Sky, which impact both the legislature and the executive, should be prioritized for a swift resolution, as they have been pending since July without any hearings.
Despite the Supreme Court’s earlier refusal to rule on applications to prevent Parliament from sending the bill to the President, it had promised an expedited hearing of the substantive case.
Sam George cited a previous judgment by Justice Yonny Kulendi and urged the Supreme Court to address the issue urgently, noting that it aligns with the issues raised in the current cases.
He called for the Chief Justice to assemble the court and expedite the decision in line with the earlier ruling.
Additionally, Sam George announced the postponement of a planned demonstration against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, rescheduling it from September 17 to October 8 due to a political event.
He stated, “There is no matter before the Supreme Court that is more important than a determination on this matter which stays the hands of both the legislature and the executive. There is no case before the Supreme Court of Ghana today that affects both the legislature and executive for which reason we believe that this must be primus inter pares.”
“There was a quorum judgment in support by His Lordship Justice Yonny Kulendi. We believe that, in light of the Supreme Court’s earlier judgment, which extensively covers the same issues raised by Amanda Odoi and Richard Dela Sky, the Chief Justice must empanel the Supreme Court and resolve the matter in alignment with the previous ruling.
“Consequently, we have decided to postpone the Family Values March from September 17 to October 8 to accommodate the political demonstration and its aftermath.”
