Road construction activities across Ghana are set to increase significantly as the government rolls out an aggressive push to improve the country’s road network, with 2026 expected to mark a peak period for nationwide works.

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, said the planned expansion of road works follows firm budgetary commitments made by President John Dramani Mahama as part of his pledge to fix deteriorating road infrastructure across the country.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr Agbodza said the government has moved beyond policy promises and planning, with resources already secured and most priority road projects awarded to contractors.

“The President has committed to improving roads across the country, and those commitments have been backed by provisions in the budget,” he said, adding that the focus has now shifted to execution.

From Contract Awards to Supervision

According to the Minister, the Ministry of Roads and Highways has completed the bulk of contract awards for planned projects, clearing the way for intensified construction activities.

He noted that the next phase will centre on strict supervision and quality assurance to ensure contractors deliver durable roads that provide value for money.

“The core of the projects has been awarded. Our task now is to closely monitor contractors and consultants to ensure quality work, considering the scale of public investment being made,” Mr Agbodza stated.

2026 Expected to Be Peak Construction Year

Mr Agbodza acknowledged Ghana’s longstanding road infrastructure deficit and said the government expects visible progress both this year and in 2026 as construction activity ramps up nationwide.

He assured the public that monitoring mechanisms would be strengthened to prevent substandard work and delays, stressing that road safety and longevity would remain central to project execution.

The intensified road works are expected to improve connectivity, support economic activity, reduce travel time, and enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians across the country.
