Road win sparks joy: Shelbourne shock Rijeka in Europe

“Road win sparks joy: Shelbourne shock Rijeka in Europe” as Shelbourne pulled off a remarkable 2-1 away win over Croatian champions Rijeka in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round clash. Goals from Sam Bone and John Martin turned the game around in the second half, putting the Reds in a strong position heading into the return leg at Tolka Park. This victory has brought Joey O’Brien’s side within touching distance of reaching the league phase, which would carry them through the autumn and winter months.

ICYMI: Maher – Sheridan’s vision helped me see All-Ireland glory

A Tough Start Against a Determined Rijeka

Rijeka came into the match with confidence, having taken Bulgarian side Ludogorets to extra time in Champions League qualifiers just a week earlier. Shelbourne, knowing the quality of their opponents, chose to play it safe with a classic 4-4-2 formation, relying on Kerr McInroy to shuttle between midfield and attack. Throughout the first half, Shelbourne found themselves under pressure, but goalkeeper Wessel Speel stood strong, making several key saves. He denied Amer Gojak’s low drive in the 22nd minute and safely gathered Niko Jankovic’s shot after he beat Milan Mbeng. Speel again made a crucial save just before the break to keep the scores level.

Second Half Turnaround

At halftime, O’Brien made a tactical switch by introducing Daniel Kelly for Mipo Udobeko. Shortly after the break, Rijeka were awarded a penalty when Merveil Ndockyt was brought down by Speel, and Jankovic calmly converted in the 56th minute. But Shelbourne struck back almost immediately. McInroy delivered a corner that was flicked on, allowing Martin to tap in the equaliser just 90 seconds later.

Martin Strikes Again to Secure the Win

Rijeka attempted to respond, with Justas Lasickas testing Speel from range, but the Shelbourne keeper parried the ball away. The Irish side then launched an attack of their own down the right flank. Mbeng fed Harry Wood, whose precise cross found Martin at the far post for a powerful header that made it 2-1 in the 70th minute. The final minutes were tense, with Rijeka pressing hard for a late equaliser. A dramatic penalty appeal for a Bone handball was turned down in stoppage time, sealing a memorable win for the visitors.
