In a world full of humans who crave love and attention, the dream of every couple is bliss, but on many occasions, these relationships and marriages turn sour with some ending in spousal killings even though they are supposed to be deeply in love.
A recent situation is a 23-year-old lady who has been reportedly killed by her boyfriend at Trom, a suburb of Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
The most common in such situations among news within the media fraternity is the use of sharp instruments to inflict wounds on each other during heated misunderstandings.
Women are mostly the victims in such situations, but there have been instances where men have not been spared during such tantrums.
To this end, a senior lecturer with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Edgar Takyi Akonor is of the view that the recent rise in the killing of couples is one that must be keenly tackled in earnest.
He cited difficult economic situations, heated arguments, and psychological problems as the leading cause of these killings.
In an interview on ATLFMNEWS, he expressed that it starts small and subsequently escalates.
“I’m saying it so that people would be aware…it always starts from very small trivial issues that are not handled properly and before you realize it has escalated.”
Shedding light on the need to speak up when abused, Mr. Akonor argued that marriage cannot change an abusive partner.
According to him, an abusive partner who decides to change has to make a conscious effort to do so.
“If there are issues that you see during dating, you have to deal with it. And the individual who is the culprit must acknowledge that yes, I have this problem and I’m willing to work on it. If the person is not willing to acknowledge that he or she has a problem, he will never see that he has a problem.
Dr. Edgar Takyi Akonor is therefore of the view that marriage should not be used as a grounds for changing people as that only serves as “grounds to misbehave”.
He stressed that people must acknowledge their state, condition, and issues and decide to make a deliberate effort to work on their temperament and anger.
