The Member of Parliament for Cape Coast South, George Ricketts-Hagan, has donated 400 street lights to help address poor lighting conditions in communities across the Cape Coast South Constituency.

The presentation, which forms part of efforts to improve security and enhance the city’s night-time visibility, was officially received by the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA), Mr. George Justice Arthur, on behalf of the Assembly and Assembly Members.

Speaking during the presentation, George Ricketts-Hagan said the donation followed widespread complaints from residents about increasing darkness in several parts of Cape Coast, a situation he described as unacceptable for a major city.

According to him, during the New Year celebrations, he engaged Assembly Members and other community leaders to discuss pressing challenges confronting the metropolis, with street lighting emerging as one of the most critical issues.

“Cape Coast has been getting darker, and that is not acceptable. I promised the people that after the New Year, I would ensure we get lights, and I committed to bringing 400 street lights to begin with this year,” he stated.

The MP explained that although the street lights are provided by the government under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, his role as an MP is to lobby for such interventions to benefit his constituents. He noted that his experience in Parliament has enabled him to secure more support for Cape Coast over the years.

Ricketts-Hagan further appealed to Assembly Members to ensure the lights are installed in the communities and not diverted for personal gain, stressing that the initiative is meant to demonstrate government’s commitment to improving living conditions and resetting the economy.

Upon receiving the items, the Cape Coast MCE, George Justice Arthur, speaking on behalf of the Assembly Members, expressed gratitude to the MP for his continued support in improving the city’s lighting system.

He noted that cable theft and vandalism have been major challenges affecting street lighting in Cape Coast, but assured that measures would be taken to ensure the new lights are properly installed and protected.

“This year, Honourable promised 400 street lights, and true to his word, he has delivered. About 30 communities in Cape Coast South will benefit, with each electoral area receiving 10 street lights,” he disclosed.

Mr. Arthur emphasized that the initiative will help ensure that communities across Cape Coast experience light rather than darkness, improving safety and quality of life for residents.

Both officials expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President, and all stakeholders for supporting the initiative, which is expected to improve street lighting across the metropolis significantly.
