The Ministry of National Security is advising users of WhatsApp and Telegram to stay vigilant, especially in safeguarding their personal information.
This caution comes in light of a recent discovery of modified versions of these apps, posing a significant cybersecurity threat for Android users.
In a statement issued on December 15, the sector minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, highlighted that these modified versions harbour a harmful software called CaneSpy, written in Arabic and Azerbaijani.
The ministry emphasized that the modified apps activate spyware upon initiation or charging, clandestinely sending sensitive data every five minutes.
However, Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has taken legal action against developers distributing unofficial WhatsApp applications that have compromised millions of user accounts.
The Ministry underscores the gravity of these findings and urges the public to take appropriate precautions, considering the widespread use of these platforms.”
