Another major blow to Manchester United’s already struggling season came via Marcus Rashford’s red card, which helped FC Copenhagen to a thrilling and qualification-damaging Champions League victory.
In a thrilling match in the Danish capital, United displayed cunning and determination at times, and twice appeared to have taken a significant lead before losing in the closing minutes to a goal by 17-year-old replacement Roony Bardghji.
Rasmus Hojlund’s two goals against his hometown team, both from close range, gave them a comfortable lead halfway through the first half. The striker was a master at knowing precisely where he needed to be, when.
Referee Donatas Rumsas was called to the pitchside monitor in the 42nd minute to assess a late tackle by Rashford on Elias Jelert’s ankle. In response, the forward was given a straight red card, which changed the outcome of the game.
After 13 minutes were tacked on, mostly due to an injury to United defender Jonny Evans and a medical issue in the stands, the home team won thanks to goals from Mohamed Elyounoussi and Diogo Goncalves, who was given a penalty after Harry Maguire handballed.

United defied their numerical disadvantage to hold the home side at bay, before again claiming the lead through Bruno Fernandes’ penalty – awarded via VAR for a handball by Lukas Lerager.
However, the home team was unbeatable. Lerager apologized and leveled the score with a back-post strike, and after United was unable to clear, Bardghji drove home.
Even though United is at the bottom of Group A and will first have to travel to Galatasaray, where they have never won, before playing host to Bayern Munich, who have already qualified, they are not yet eliminated.
