The Railway Workers Union of Ghana, under the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has announced plans to embark on a lawful strike and peaceful picketing over 12 months of unpaid salaries.
In a statement released on 15th September 2025 and signed by the Union’s General Secretary, Benjamin Essuman, the group said the situation has brought unbearable hardship to its members, many of whom are struggling to care for their families.
“The delay in payments has plunged workers into severe hardship, health complications, and disruptions to their children’s education,” the statement read.
The Union accused the Ministry of Transport, under which the Ghana Railway Company Limited, a fully state-owned enterprise operates, of failing to take meaningful steps despite repeated appeals.
According to Mr. Essuman, workers have lost patience and are ready to use every lawful means to press home their demands.
“We can no longer endure the suffering caused by these unpaid salaries. If by 22nd September 2025 there is no clear commitment from government, we will proceed with a full strike action effective 30th September 2025,” he warned.
The Union emphasized that its actions are within the provisions of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), Sections 160 and 171, which guarantee workers the right to strike and peaceful protest.
Mr. Essuman added that the Union remains committed to dialogue but will not compromise the welfare of its members, noting “We are law-abiding citizens, but our patience has limits. We are calling on government to act now before the situation escalates.”
The looming strike threatens to disrupt railway operations across the country, potentially affecting commuters and freight services if the impasse is not resolved.
