The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), alongside FUSSAG and TEWU-TUC, have jointly declared an indefinite nationwide strike, effective immediately.
The Unions are accusing the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) of betraying trust and have slammed the government for withholding five months of pension contributions.
The directive was triggered by what the unions call a ‘unilateral and alien’ decision by FWSC to scrap overtime allowances.
According to the unions, a signed agreement has been in place since 2021, qualifying senior staff for overtime pay. However, the University of Ghana (UG) recently scrapped this in favour of a “Call-in” allowance, claiming a lack of financial resources and rejection by the Audit Service.
The unions allege a “breach of engagement” after the FWSC reportedly testified to the National Labour Commission (NLC) that it “testified in error” previously and now claims that senior staff no longer qualify for overtime.
While the NLC has adjourned hearings to February 11, the unions say other institutions, including UHAS and UDS, have already begun implementing the disputed pay cuts.
They also slammed the government for failing to remit Tier-2 pension contributions from August to December 2024. The unions are demanding these payments immediately, plus a 3% penalty for the delay.
