Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate for John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, has fervently called for the Electoral Commission to maintain transparency as we approach the December 2024 General Elections.
Amidst growing concerns over its handling of essential equipment, the credibility of the Electoral Commission is reportedly under scrutiny.
Speaking at an event where she was officially introduced, Professor Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the critical need for the Commission to address and dispel the ongoing scepticism about its operations.
The former Education Minister underscored that without clear and definitive reassurances from the Commission, public trust in the electoral process could be severely compromised.
“Electoral Commission, I address you directly. It is in the national interest and in your own interest to make transparent what has been and is going on in your establishment…The truth will not be suppressed. You cannot be so independent as to disregard the people who validate your existence. It does not happen,” she stressed.
Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang stated that she and the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, are committed to prosecuting individuals involved in corrupt practices and the misuse of state resources.
she emphasized that the NDC’s ticket had reached an agreement that anyone engaged in corruption would face accountability if the NDC won the elections.
She said “John and I have agreed that whoever has participated in the plunder of the state must be held accountable and my friends this is not a threat…It is the promise which is premised on the wishes of our citizens across the political divide and it is hinged on the principle of accountability.”
She also criticized what she described as the promotion of ethnocentric elitism disguised as intellectualism, weakness portrayed as courage, and crony capitalism masked as developmental progress and freedom.
These according to her “never served a country determined to make progress at any level.”
Shameless hypocrisy. Pretending to be objective. This will never move our country forward.
Rather, the most significant achievement of all this has been a country in near insolvency. Its natural resources, such as water, land, and even the environment, in rebellion. A people harassed and intimidated into numbness.
And some of us also bribed into silence. I envisage a report on the administration of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, ticket of the NDC, in his reign 2013 to early 2017. And I bet that the report will have no reference to the following.
“1. A multi-million-dollar dugout; I don’t know about you but the image I get looking at the trench is that of a hole in utter shock that anyone could believe it was intended as a thanksgiving gift to the Almighty, Invisible, God Only Wise “
“2. A free SHS at war, with the battle fought on the grounds of food, shelter, space, calendar, teaching and learning materials, or those who spend a couple of weeks at school and several months idling at home; past questions instead of textbooks and science equipment, or an atmosphere that suppresses learning.”
“3. Free water and electricity to a few that turns out to be the most expensive for all.”
She added that such a report would not find:
“Covid-19 money is shared for partisan political campaign purposes, while people die from a lack of support at our health facilities.”
“An Agyapa-like manifesto under the NDC led by JDM”
“It would not include:
A president clearing malfeasance and writing love letters to prejudge a bad situation
It would not find:”
Unemployment has jumped from 8 to 14% (check out the actual numbers), a GDP that has gone AWOL or a cedi that refuses to be tamed. Or,
Weak efforts to hide the truth of dumsor.”
