ATL FM NEWS gathers that managers of some private hostels at the University of Cape Coast are asking students to go home following UTAG’s strike.
According to the hostel managers, the continuous stay by the students will throw the budget of the hostels overboard since their stay will exceed the estimated nine months’ rent.
In a notice sighted by ATLFM NEWS, the management of one of the hostels indicated that “due to the strike by UTAG and the current impasse between UTAG and government, resident students were being advised to consider going back home until UTAG calls off its strike”.
Some students who have received such notice are appealing to the Student Representative Council of UCC to, as a matter of urgency, intervene.
SRC president-UCC, Mr. Samuel Kwabena Addotei, mentioned that this development has come to his attention and efforts are being made to resolve it.
“We have immediately informed the office of the Dean of Students and then we have made an arrangement to meet some of the hostel managers where we want to have that dialogue because we believe that they do not have the power to tell students to go home,” he said.
With the dragging UTAG strike which has left many students stranded and worried, Mr. Addotei advised the student body of UCC to remain calm.
UTAG has been on strike since January 10, 2022.
