The president General of the Center of Awareness Global Peace Mission, Professor Prof. Samuel Ato Duncan has visited the Moree community following the severe tidal waves that hit the town.
Moree, a community in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese district in the Central Region known for its fishing activities experienced the devastating tidal waves on Sunday, April 16, 2023, which swept off fifteen buildings with over a hundred people rendered homeless, including children and pregnant women.
Professor Dr. Samuel Ato Duncan who visited the community on Saturday, April 22, 2023, expressed his worry over the sight and described the incident as one that possess a serious threat to peace and global security.
“Now, about 100 people have been displaced, and we don’t know what will happen in the next few weeks and few months. So, I think that something must be done as early as possible.”
His visit was aimed at making a proper assessment of the degree of damage caused by the wave to the community and to interact with both the traditional and opinion leaders, as well as the affected individuals on the assistance needed.
According to him, the solutions to the disaster cannot be done single-handedly, and therefore called on the government and corporate bodies and organizations to intervene to offer the needed assistance.
To him, the provision of sea defense to the community will prevent further occurrence.
“I believe that this’s a time we have to convey the message to His Excellency that there’s a need for immediate intervention. I learned that about three years ago, we had a beach of about 5200 meters. Now, this whole place has been covered by the sea.”
Speaking to the ATLFMNEWS, the regent of Moree, Nana Obokese Ampah 1 disclosed that the community feels neglected as all efforts made to relevant authorities for support have proven futile.
He says it saddens his heart seeing the victims which include children sleeping under sheds and therefore called for urgent support from all stakeholders.
“If not for God, Ghana will be mourning the entire Moree community. The sea was a tidal wave. It was just crazy. And it’s not the first time, this has been happening. What happened recently is like the last straw that broke the camel’s back” he said.
Other affected victims including Mbrantie Hene, Sofo Kweku Tawiah also made a clarion call on all concerned bodies, especially the government for immediate support to salvage the situation before it escalates.
