President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has encouraged Ghanaians to take their vaccines for the nation to achieve its herd immunity noting that the vaccines are safe.
He said contrary to the mischief being peddled by some that the vaccines will change one’s political preferences, the vaccines have been developed to protect individuals against the pandemic.
“Let me state, as clearly as I can. The vaccines are safe. They will not harm you. They will protect you and your family… Vaccination cannot change your political preferences. That is not its purpose.” He emphasized.
Delivering his 27th Covid-19 update on Sunday regarding measures taken to combat the virus, he said there is enough vaccines in the country although only 6,420,973 doses out of the 17.7 million have been administered to Ghanaians.
He indicated that “as at Tuesday, 14th December, the Ghana Health Service has taken delivery of 17,736,710 vaccine doses. We are expecting an additional 8,529,090 doses by the end of the year. We have enough vaccines in the system. So, my fellow Ghanaians, I encourage each and every one of you to take advantage of this, and get vaccinated.”
President Akufo Addo stated that an €82.5 million facility has been approved for Ghana by the European Investment Bank for use in the effort to strengthen healthcare delivery and the provision of specialist medical equipment and medicines across the country.
He said government has set aside €20 million of this money to establish the National Vaccine Institute, which will supervise the domestic production of COVID-19 and other vaccines, led by the private sector and business community.
He noted that the government has also beefed up its response capacity to deal with any upsurge in infections of the virus.
He added saying “overtime, we have expanded our healthcare infrastructure, including oxygen supply and reach, particularly with respect to testing and treatment centers, and the training of health professionals across the country, in the care of severe and critically ill persons.
The president however said adherence to the protocols against the Covid 19 virus and getting vaccinated remains the best bet to fighting the virus.
