President Akufo-Addo has reimbursed the Controller and Accountants General’s Department a total sum of 237,974, being his pay increment from January to August 2021.
As part of efforts to mitigate the harm to the public purse caused by the coronavirus epidemic, the President put a hold on salary increases for government employees in May this year.
The President discovered that the order he made in May had not been followed when he received his cumulative pay for January to August 2021.
Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, told members of the Presidential Press Corps at the Weekly Press Briefing on Tuesday that, the President has also ordered the Chief of Staff to ensure that other government officials refund their pay increases as well.
“Leading by example on Thursday the 2nd of September, he wrote a cheque amounting to GHC 237,974 to the pensions and salaries account of the controller and accountant’s general department to reflect the decision he has taken to freeze salary increment for himself and he has instructed the chief of staff to ensure that the vice president, the ministers and deputy ministers of state and other appointees of the executives also refund increment that has so far been made to them…the chief of staff has duly communicated that to all members of staff of the state.”

He also denied allegations made by the North Tongu Constituency Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, that the President hired another luxury plane for his recent travels to the United Kingdom and Germany.
He said that Mr Ablakwa’s claims about President Akufo- Addo’s recent trip are incorrect, and that he did not utilize a Luxembourg-based aircraft with the registration number LX-DIO as indicated by the MP.
He therefore encouraged the MP to crosscheck his facts next time such information is tabled before him.
