The Ghana Police Service has announced an extensive traffic management and security operation to ensure smooth vehicular movement during the funeral of the eight who perished in last week’s Z-9 helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra this morning, Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng said traffic police officers would begin screening vehicles around the Black Star Square vicinity from midday today, continuing through the night and into tomorrow.
“Our aim is to ensure the free flow of traffic for mourners, family members, dignitaries, and the general public attending the funeral,” he stated.
From 5:00 a.m. tomorrow, traffic police will manage and, where necessary, divert traffic from Labone and Osu through Independence Square to the Central Business District. Diversion routes have been designated to ease congestion, including Osu Street, Independence Avenue, Castle Road, and Liberia Road.
Chief Supt. Obeng added that multiple car parks have been secured, including the Agricultural Car Park, areas around the stadium, the State House frontage, and designated VIP/VVIP parking spaces behind the Independence Arch. A first aid area has also been set up to cater to emergencies.
To prevent obstructions, recovery trucks and towing vehicles will be on standby to remove broken-down or abandoned vehicles. The police will also collaborate with the military to control traffic around the military cemetery along the Burma Camp road.
“Tomorrow is also a working day, so our deployment will ensure that public servants and routine road users accessing the ministries and Central Business District are not unduly inconvenienced,” Chief Supt. Obeng assured.
The funeral is expected to attract large crowds, including high-profile dignitaries, to honour the memory of the fallen officers.
Relatedly, The Ghana Police Service has announced the temporary closure of selected roads in Accra and the implementation of traffic diversions to ensure public safety and smooth vehicular movement during the state funeral for victims of the recent military helicopter crash.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 14, the Police said the measures would be in force on Friday, August 15, 2025, when the Inter-Denominational and Inter-Faith State Funeral takes place at the Independence Square.
Road Closures
The following routes will be closed to traffic on the day of the funeral:
- 28th February Road from CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to Castle Road Junction
- Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street
- Castle Road from AU to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light
- Starlet 91 Road, which will be closed at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection
Traffic Diversions
Motorists have been advised to note the following alternative routes:
- Traffic from La, Labone, and Osu on the 28th February Road towards the Central Business District and Ministries will be diverted onto Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light to link with Oxford Street.
- Vehicles from Lokko Street, Osu towards Castle Road should use Ajumako Street and Oxford Street in Osu.
- Traffic on John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection towards the National Theatre Traffic Light.
- Motorists from AU Circle towards Castle Road via Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be redirected through Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to Abdul Nasser Road in front of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).
The Police urged the public to cooperate fully with traffic officers and follow the outlined diversions to ensure a smooth flow of movement on the day.
“The Ghana Police Service wishes to inform the general public that these measures are to ensure public safety and smooth traffic management during this solemn national event,” the statement read.
The state funeral will honour eight victims who perished in the Air Force Z-9 helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region last week.
