The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, states that the police administration has implemented a new procedure in which police personnel killed in the course of duty would be replaced by a qualified family member.
According to the IGP, this is part of a comprehensive Ghana Police Service initiative to safeguard the wellbeing of police personnel.
According to him, this is one of the finest methods to console the bereaved family.

During a public lecture at KNUST, the IGP said that one million dollars had been put aside as seed money for the police medical intervention fund, which would ensure that any officer wounded in the line of duty receives the finest medical care.
“We also instituted a mechanism to ensure that all indisposed police officers are visited. I started doing it myself across the country. Regional and district commanders are doing it. We have institutionalized it such that they will feel that if anyone by any chance becomes incapacitated, we will always be there for them. “
“We have also established a Police Intervention Medical Emergency Fund with seed money of $1 million. It will support anyone who gets injured in the line of duty. We have also made provisions for those who die in the line of duty. We will provide the opportunity for a child or brother who qualifies to take the deceased’s place.”
Dr. Jones Opoku Ware, a criminologist, has called for a wider consultation with affected families about the IGP’s plan to replace fallen police officers with qualified family members.
