The Ghana Police Service says it has secured a Court order requiring Madina Member of Parliament Francis-Xavier Sosu to appear in court on November 8, 2021.
This comes after many unsuccessful police efforts to apprehend the lawmaker, who is accused of breaking the law during a recent rally by the people of Oyarifa and its environs.
On two occasions, police were unable to arrest the MP, and efforts to invite Sosu via the Speaker of Parliament were denied.
The actions of the police were later characterized as a violation of the law by the Speaker of Parliament.
The Acting Director-General for the Public Affairs Department of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Kwesi Ofori, told the media on the sidelines of a meeting between the Inspector General of Police and selected Civil Society Organizations that the MP is expected to answer questions in court on November 8.
On October 25, 2021, the MP organized a demonstration for some of his constituents to voice their dissatisfaction with the state of their roads.
The drill took place amid roadblocks and the burning of tires, as well as the suspected vandalism of public property.
After failing to appear for police summons, Francis-Xavier accused the security agency of lying about what happened.
Mr. Sosu asserted in a statement that he was not engaged in blocking roads or destroying property during the demonstration, as the police claimed.
He said that the police were lying in order to divert public attention away from crucial concerns such as bad roads.
