A professor at the Department of Physics at the University of Cape Coast, Professor Raymond Edziah has called for an improved capacity building of teachers in science, technology, and mathematics at the senior high school level.
According to him, most of the teachers lack the skill and expertise to adequately explain certain concepts that will better position the students to get the needed foundation in a given subject of study.
He made this known on the sidelines of a one-day workshop held by the UCC chapter of the Ghana Science Association for teachers in and around the Cape Coast Metropolis.
The Ghana Science Association UCC organized this workshop with the aim of introducing Senior High School teachers to modern teaching methods and skills.
The workshop was also to improve teachers’ knowledge and understanding of particular scientific concepts identified in the WEAC Chief Examiner’s report as the primary reason for student exams failure.

Prof Edziah emphasized that it is important teachers get the right training to help students perform better in science and mathematics.
“Physics is the foundation of science and so at that level, if the foundation is wrong, then it is difficult for the students to build on. So if you don’t lay the foundation well, you can’t build on it, and so what we are trying to do is that we want to help the teachers get more prepared so that they can give the students what they need as the foundation on which to build their science career.” He said.
He also stressed the need for teachers to inculcate the practical aspect of STEM in their teaching to help students better understand concepts.
