Perez Chapel International will today begin one-week fasting and prayer over the controversy between the church’s founder, Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, and the chiefs and people of Nogokpo in the Volta Region.
The controversy began on May 25 when Archbishop Agyinasare made comments during a church service about the Nogokpo shrine, referring to it as the “demonic headquarters” of the Volta Region.
These comments sparked anger among the shrine’s elders, who summoned the Archbishop to appear before them or face their wrath.
In response to the situation on Sunday, June 4, the Presiding Bishop of Perez Chapel International, Benjamin Ohene Aboagye emphasized the importance of seeking guidance from God hence the declaration of the one-week fasting and prayer from June 5 to June 11.
As such the Perez Church has called on all members of the church to participate.
“We are declaring a one-week fast from the 5th to the 11th of this month, and we expect all pastors, elders, deacons, deaconesses, and all our churches to participate in this fast for one week. We believe that God is our helper. He is our rock. He is the one we look up to. So this is the decision we have taken for now. We expect everyone [in all our branches] to take part in this fast,” he said.
While the controversy has caused tension between the church and the Nogokpo community, it has also sparked a broader conversation about the role of traditional beliefs and practices in modern Ghanaian society.
Some have criticized Archbishop Agyinasare’s comments as disrespectful and insensitive to the Nogokpo community and its beliefs, while others have defended his right to express his religious views.
Meanwhile, Archbishop Agyinasare has clarified that he did not intend to insult the people of Nogokpo and has expressed regret for any offense his comments may have caused.
