Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Palgrave Boakye-Danquah says government is willing to have engagement with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to understand their concerns.
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) at a press conference on Monday, December 12, 2022, reiterated its intention to advice itself if government fails to announce within a week the exemption of pension funds from the Debt Exchange programme.
They said government should publicly announce that all pension funds, including Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), were exempted from the Debt Exchange Programme.
According to Dr Yaw Baah, the Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress, the programme will negatively affect the pension funds of the congress and its affiliate members and, consequently, their retirement income security.
He added that if government refuses to accede to their demand after the one-week ultimatum, all workers should be ready to participate fully in any industrial action to protect their pension funds.
Reacting to this in an interview on ATL FM’s ATLANTIC WAVE, Mr. Boakye-Danquah said even as government plans to hold conversations with the TUC and other organized labour groups, the government is optimistic about reaching an agreement with them.
“Government clearly is a very listening government. We are going to be having engagement with TUC and have engagements with labour organizations so that we can be able to meet them halfway and understand their issues for them to also understand government’s position and issues” he said.
He added that they are confident that once these conversations begin, the labour groups will come on board and support government achievement, goals and ambitions.
