The Right Honourable Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumanna Kingsford Bagbin, has emphasized the crucial role of Ghana’s Parliament as a cornerstone of democracy.
He underscored that the House of Legislature should not be taken for granted, as it acts as a mirror of the nation’s democratic values.
He expressed the need for parliament to be strengthened to ensure Ghanaians benefit from democratic governance.
If the people are to benefit from democratic governance, it is the parliament which is the mirror of democracy that is the focus that should be strengthened.
To Bagbin, it is parliament that has the only function of oversight emphasizing that “It is parliament that should ensure that our collective efforts, whether in terms of energy, in terms of resources, in terms of rights and trusts, is properly applied to the benefit of everyone.”
Speaker Alban Bagbin was speaking at the commissioning of the new Parliamentary Office Complex in Accra on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
He said Parliament serves as the voice of the people and that it is essential for the institution to stay committed to this purpose.
He stressed that maintaining this focus would be instrumental in strengthening Ghana’s democratic foundations.
However, Alban Sumanna Kingsford Bagbin called for a collaborative effort by all to strengthen Ghana’s Parliament.
“And we have to work together to make sure that our people don’t suffer and struggle to elect us in vain.
“And so, what we’re doing here is towards focusing to make sure that the will of the people which is reposed in Parliament is not misapplied, is not abused, is not taken for granted, but it is used to the benefit of all, leaving nobody behind.”
