Ghana’s Parliament has officially approved the nomination of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as the new Chief Justice.
This decision was reached after the Appointments Committee of Parliament unanimously endorsed her candidacy following her vetting on May 26, 2023.
President Akufo Addo nominated Justice Gertrude Torkonoo in April 2023 to succeed the 14th Chief Justice in Ghana, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah after his retirement from service on May 24, 2023.
Justice Gertrude Torkonoo is the third female Chief Justice in the history of Ghana after Justices Georgina Theodora Wood and Sophia Akuffo.
As the new Chief Justice, Justice Torkornoo will have the responsibility of leading the judiciary and ensuring that justice is delivered fairly and impartially.
She will also be expected to tackle the challenges facing the judiciary, including corruption, delays in the justice system, and the need for modernization.
