The Cape Coast Metropolitan Director of Education, Mrs. Phyllis Asante-Krobea is urging parents to prioritize their children’s education in order to improve learning outcomes in the country.
According to her, their involvement demonstrates to students the importance of education and encourages them to take their studies seriously.
In an exclusive interview on the ATLANTIC WAVE, Mrs. Asante- Krobea noted that parents’ inability to provide for the needs of their wards has dire effects on their education since it leads to students’ absenteeism and poor attitude toward learning among others.
She said although government has over the years provided free education to children, the burden must not fall solely on government.
She, therefore, urged parents to contribute in any small way to help government provide quality education throughout the nation.
“You know, the government is paying for the fees and instead of using the money to pay for that we expect that some little things like pencils, books, and other things, parents can afford.” He said.
She also added that it is important for students to focus on their studies while in school, as the success of their education will also ensure the success of their future.
To her, government is already doing its best to ensure that no young person of school-going age is left out but goes through education to safeguard their future.
In her assessment of the recently completed 2022 Basic Education Certificate Examination, she indicated that the examination within the metropolis was generally successful.
She explained that, contrary to last year, the centres had enough furniture, students heeded to advise to get there early, and the examinations started on time.
She however noted that the student turnout for the 2022 BECE was 3,756; a number lower than 3824 of the student turnout for the 2021 BECE in the Cape Coast metropolis.
Hence she stressed the need for parents to ensure they are involved in helping their wards complete school successfully.
