In the wake of devastating torrential rains and devastating floods that have swept across the Central Region over the past two weeks, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has confirmed that more than 4,600 individuals have been affected by floods and fires in multiple districts.
The affected municipalities include Awutu Senya East, Gomoa East, Effutu, Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abrem, Twifo Atti Morkwaa, and Cape Coast Metropolis, among others.
Providing a situational update during a regional press briefing, Central Regional Director of NADMO, Emmanuel Kwasi Dawood Mensah officials detailed the scope of the crisis, which has left families displaced, homes inundated or destroyed, and essential infrastructure compromised.
According to him, specific suburbs in Cape Coast, such as London Bridge, Zion, Ntsin, and Gyegyaano, have borne the brunt of the flooding, with numerous residents now in urgent need of assistance.
He noted that two individuals, Fredrick Kwesi Yeboah (21) and Obaapanyin Ataa Kakra (79), were rescued alive and are currently receiving treatment.
In response to the building collapse and ongoing structural threats, Mr. Dawood Mensah indicated that the CCMA, in partnership with NADMO and other agencies, has commenced a large-scale demolition exercise targeting structurally unsound and high-risk buildings across Cape Coast.
He said these structures, many of which were previously identified as hazardous, pose significant danger to public safety, particularly given the forecast of continued heavy rainfall from the Ghana Meteorological Agency.
He therefore appealed to government bodies, civil society organizations, philanthropists, and the general public to support its relief and recovery efforts.
