President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appealed to Ghanaians to embrace peace and unity ahead of the 2024 general election.
He says Ghanaians have only one country as such every Ghanaian must eschew comments and actions that tend to ruin the peace and security the country is experiencing.
Nana Akufo Addo made this passionate appeal while addressing workers’ unions, organized labour, and the country at the Black Stars Square at the May Day celebrations.
Speaking on the theme for this year’s celebration, Election 2024: The Role of Workers and Social Partners in Securing Peaceful Elections for National Development, the president urged Ghanaians to engage in intellectual debate that focuses on promoting the country and consolidating its democratic gains rather than dividing it.
He also assured his unwavering commitment to ensuring the 2023 Election becomes peaceful, free, fair and transparent.
“In spite of our differing opinions on policy issues, we should always resort to established protocols to express our displeasure and grievance without disruption to peace and national security.”
“We are one people with a common identity. Our political affiliations should not divide us. Instead, our different political opinions should unite us and provoke at the least intellectual debate on how best we can move the country forward for the progress and prosperity of all.”
“As your president, I want to assure you of my unflinching commitment to ensuring that the 2024 elections are conducted in a free, fair, transparent and peaceful manner. Government remains steadfast. It is resolved to uphold the principles of democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights,” he said.
On the current power crisis, President Akufo-Addo doubled down on his pledge to eradicate the longstanding power issues, adding that all issues related to “dumsor” have been effectively addressed.
According to him, the issues surrounding maintenance of transformers and gas supply have been successfully resolved, resulting in a sufficient improvement in “Indeed, over the past few days, we have witnessed stable electricity supply across the country, with no low shutting reported anywhere yesterday.
“For the past seven years, we have worked tirelessly to keep the lights on, and I am confident that the unfortunate era of Dumsor will not return,” he continued.
