President Akufo-Addo has charged Ghana’s judiciary service to conduct itself in the discharge of its mandate in a manner that inspires confidence in the Ghanaian populace.
He said the country has for the past years witnessed 30 years of multiparty democracy under the Constitution of the 4th Republic which has provided the framework for the longest period of uninterrupted, stable, constitutional governance in our otherwise turbulent history.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Ghana Bar Association 2023/2021 Annual General Conference. President Akufo-Addo reminded the members of the Ghana Bar Association to chart the course that deepens public confidence and consider the courts as an arbiter of disputes.
He also charged the Legislative arm of government to effectively carry out its constitutional mandate to ensure accountability and oversight of the executive.
President Akufo-Addo also called for the need to strive for high standards and integrity in public life.
“What is important, however, is that the Ghanaian people have demonstrated that they are fully conversant with the process of peaceful democratic transitions and need no lessons in the exercise of their democratic rights. Maintaining high standards and integrity in public life is key to extending our association with multiparty democracy” he said.
This he believes is a major factor in attracting the needed investment, foreign and domestic needs which expands and sustains the economy of the country.
He mentioned the need to attach seriousness to the fight against corruption with its reputation damage to businesses and investments.
“We will attract the requisite investments if we continue to hold ourselves as a haven of peace, security and stability and if we continue to show that we are a country where the separation of powers is real and the principles of democratic accountability and respect for the rule of law, individual liberties and human rights are firmly entrenched in our body politics.”
The Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkorno said GBA members need to view the calling of serving the public with tools for integrating and applying laws, demanding rights and imposition of obligations.
She notes that this must be carried out with a deep culture of respect for the principles edicts and directions that society has shaped for itself.
“Since law is a collective product of society’s projections of will, then it is our critical duty on being given recognition as persons Learned in law to ensure that our work produces the much sought-after values of justice, fairness and the rule of law that started the journey of lawmaking.”
“Our call is to simply serve the public. Our call is to simply serve our communities. We are required to be the guardians of rights, interpreters of the concept of justice and advocates for justice for both the strong and the weak, without fear or favour, affection or ill will. This is why the theme for this year’s conference is especially heart-warming.”
