The Minority Spokesperson on Parliament’s Economy and Development Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has criticized the newly passed 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, describing it as inadequate and incapable of delivering the much-touted transformation of Ghana’s economy.
Parliament on Friday, February 6, 2026, passed the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, 2025, following extensive debate between the Majority and Minority caucuses.
The legislation seeks to establish a 24-Hour Economy Authority to oversee the implementation of the government’s 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme. The Authority is expected to coordinate public and private sector participation, mobilize investment, and ensure the necessary infrastructure and regulatory systems are in place to sustain round-the-clock economic activity.
However, speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah questioned the substance of the law, arguing that it does not compel any institution to operate on a 24-hour basis.
“When you read the bill, nowhere in the bill does it say they are going to cause even state agencies or private agencies to work for 24 hours. The 1-3-3 they gave us, nowhere in the bill will you find it,” he stated.
He further described the Authority as a “crafty institution,” claiming it was designed to create the impression of action without delivering concrete outcomes.
“What they have created is a very crafty institution to dangle in the face of young Ghanaians that the 24-Hour bill has been passed so something is happening. Absolutely nothing is happening,” he asserted.
The Minority spokesperson maintained that the structure outlined in the law will not achieve the intended 24-hour work cycle.
“I say with a lot of pain and I regret to say that what they have passed will not deliver a 24-Hour work cycle in this country. We will be here. I regret to say that they have deceived the young people of this country,” he added.
The government, however, maintains that the establishment of the Authority marks a significant step toward operationalizing the policy nationwide.
