The National Road Safety Authority said contrary to media reports that 16 people died in the Gomoa Okyereko accident, only 6 people were confirmed dead.
According to the NRSA, 62 passengers were on board the Neoplan Bus however, 56 passengers including both drivers sustained various degrees of injuries.
In a statement, the NRSA emphasized that 6 passengers including the driver’s mates of both vehicles died on the spot while 8 passengers escaped unhurt.
Also, 48 victims are currently at the Trauma Hospital in Winneba and the Winneba Municipal Hospital receiving treatment.
The NRSA also indicated that “Preliminary investigation by the Authority shows that the vehicles involved in the crash, an Iveco Trakker Tanker with registration number WR 2063-10 loaded with Premix Fuel from Tema to Apam collided with a Neoplan bus with registration number GR 5866-L loaded with sixty-two (62) passengers on board from Liberia heading towards Buduburam at the early hours of 4:30 am on Tuesday, March 30th, 2023.”
The authority is therefore calling on the media to be circumspect in their reportage of road traffic crashes by checking on the authenticity of the facts and figures from the right source(s) before publication.
While calling on passengers to also join the advocacy in speaking against the misconduct of drivers, the NRSA admonished drivers who ply the Accra-Kumasi, Accra- Cape Coast Highways to obey road traffic regulations to safeguard the lives of passengers.
The Authority also reiterates its call for the dualization of the major roads and highways in the country.
