Wife of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Professor Angela Ofori-Atta, has stated that her husband will face the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) at the appropriate time, assuring Ghanaians that he is not avoiding accountability.
In her first public comments since Mr. Ofori-Atta underwent cancer surgery in the United States, Professor Ofori-Atta told Joy News that her husband remains committed to the values of public service and responsibility.
“This is not a Ken who runs away from accountability,” she said. “He has never shied away from addressing issues when called upon. Even while in office, he was constantly held accountable.”
Her comments come at a time when the former Finance Minister has been officially placed on Interpol’s red notice list amid ongoing corruption investigations by the OSP.
Critics have raised questions about his absence from legal proceedings, with some accusing him of evading justice under the guise of medical treatment.
Professor Ofori-Atta, however, pushed back against such claims, suggesting that public discourse around her husband may not be purely about justice.
“I don’t agree that this is simply the OSP trying to do its job. There are other factors at play. Ghana is home, and when the time is right, he will return.”
Providing an update on Mr. Ofori-Atta’s health, she confirmed he is recovering steadily from surgery performed on June 13, 2025, after a cancer diagnosis, revealing “He’s doing very well. He’s a real trooper going through recovery. We just need to ensure his wounds don’t get infected,” she said.
In response, Director of Strategy, Research, and Communications at the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Samuel Appiah Darko, challenged the narrative, insisting that Mr. Ofori-Atta has not submitted any certified medical documentation to justify his absence from law enforcement proceedings.
Taking to social media, he questioned the legitimacy of the former minister’s medical claims, stating “You may choose to distort facts or shift the goalposts, but the truth remains: as of today, Mr. Ofori-Atta has not provided any certified medical report or flight risk assessment from a qualified physician indicating that he is incapacitated.”
Samuel Appiah further noted that the OSP had granted the former minister ample time between February and June 2, 2025 to appear before investigators, but he failed or refused to do so.
He also disputed suggestions that Mr. Ofori-Atta underwent surgery in March, as previously claimed by some sources.
“Has Mr. Ofori-Atta not traveled in and out of the UK and USA between March and May 31, 2025? If he is able to fly internationally, what prevented him from appearing before law enforcement?” he questioned.
