The Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) has partnered with the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) to provide a new water supply in Odumase in the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District of the Central Region.
This initiative falls under the Ghana National Gas Company’s Corporate Social Responsibility to ease government burden on projects in the country.
The inauguration also featured the celebration of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency’s 25 years of work in water development and was on the theme, “25 years of sustaining WASH services: transforming rural and small towns water services delivery towards national development.”
Speaking at the event, the Corporate Social Responsibility Officer at Ghana National Gas Company, Edomgbole Anyimah Nwiah appealed to the residents to adopt a maintenance culture in the use of the newly commissioned water supply in the community.
He also urged the community residents to adopt sustainable practices in the use of the water supply in order to preserve it for future generations and called on traditional leaders, assembly members and MCEs “to guard this water supply and see to it that the maintenance culture is continued.”
According to Mr. Anyimah Nwiah, all 16 regions across Ghana have so far benefited from the benevolence of the Ghana Gas water development project with Central region having a number of projects already commissioned.
He said the Obohen-Odumase Water Supply to Odumase residents have been successful through the partnership with the Community Water and Sanitation Agency adding that “we wish to continue this partnership so that more water projects can come up in terms of its quality.”
The Chief Executive Officer of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CSWA), Mr. Aloysius Adjetey underscored the need for partnerships in improving water access in rural areas.
According to him, access to water supply in rural communities and small towns in Ghana has improved through partnerships and donor support since the launch of the National Community Water and Sanitation Strategy (NCWSP) in 1994.
He added that CWSP is also now positioned to sustain WASH interventions with responsibility for the provision and management of community water systems while providing support to communities in management of water-related sanitation services.
“CWSP has a commitment towards strengthening partnerships to increase and sustain investments in improving water infrastructure to reduce the financial burden of government. Through the collective efforts, we can close gaps in access to water for all.”
According to Mr. Aloysius Adjetey the Obohen-Odumase Water Supply project was funded by Ghana National Gas Company at a total investment cost of 2 million Cedis and his outfit (CWSC) has mandated nearby water staff to provide oversight responsibilities for sustainable management of the process.
“It has become necessary to sincerely ask the Odumase community to be vigilant and assist CWSC to protect the components, especially the pipelines, and to prevent deliberate sabotage by those who will cut the pipelines in an attempt to connect water to their farmlands or to their homes so that together we can protect the water infrastructure.”
He further entreated users to pay promptly at the fetching point to ensure smooth operation of the water system.
Speaking at the inauguration, Lawrence Doku, a representative of the Central Regional Minister and Director at the Environmental Sanitation Agency commended CSWA for their great achievements over the past 25 years of service.
He therefore reiterated the need for the agency to assist communities on the necessary measures to take and preserve their various water supply.
