President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, has emphasized the critical importance of maintaining an independent and strong student front, free from political interference.
Mr. Kyeremeh emphasized that his administration has been working to break away from these influences, striving to advocate for students’ interests without fear or favor.
“My administration, along with my executives, is committed to ensuring that we represent students without any political interference,” he asserted.
“Over the past years, people have seen the union as a politicized front. There was a lot of political infiltration, which prevented us from embarking on many advocacies,” Mr. Kyeremeh stated.
He pointed out that political biases within the union had made it difficult to criticize certain government policies, especially when those in power shared the same political affiliation as union leaders.
In an interview with JoyNews Mr. Kyeremeh expressed the union’s firm commitment to standing up for students’ rights and concerns across the country, acknowledging the long-standing perception that NUGS has been politicized, with political affiliations often hampering the union’s ability to advocate effectively for students.
The NUGS President also highlighted the crucial role of education in empowering the youth, arguing that weakening the educational sector would be the most effective way to undermine young people in Ghana.
“The reason why I am so focused on our educational sector is that if you want to weaken the young people in this country, the main medium you could use is education. So, we are very keen on ensuring that the necessary measures are put in place,” he explained.
He assured that his administration would closely monitor the Ministry of Education and other related agencies to ensure that the right actions are taken to benefit students.
As the NUGS elections approach, Mr. Kyeremeh revealed determination to lead the union in a new direction, free from political distractions, stressing the importance of maintaining the union’s independence to effectively address the challenges facing students.
