The Executive Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Osei Assibey Antwi has called President Akufo-Addo to endorse the Ghana National Service Authority Bill 2024 which aims to establish the National Service Scheme as an autonomous entity.
This appeal was made during the NSS policy launch on April 15, 2024, where the potential benefits of this policy were highlighted.
Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi emphasized that the autonomy would allow the NSS to enhance and expand its programs, including the NSS teaching model and the NSS Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) accounting initiative.
He emphasized that making the scheme autonomous would create many benefits and enhance its operational performance.
Speaking at the policy launch Mr. Assibey emphasized that the National Service Scheme beyond this policy must be strengthened, capacitated and significantly resourced to regulate the mobilisation and deployment of personnel.
This according to him, can be done by upgrading the scheme from its status to a more noble and standardised scheme.
“In this regard, I wish to make a passionate appeal to Mr. President that the Ghana National Service Authority Bill 2024, currently before Mr. President, Mr. President, the new law will grant the authority opportunity to expand existing programmes such as the NSS Teaching model, NSS MSME accounting aid which aims at formalizing the informal sector, NSS support for hospitality and tourism development, NSS IT solution, NSS youth and Agric.”
Speaking at the launch, President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo expressed his support for the initiative by calling on all stakeholders to support this positive change.
He noted that such reforms would strengthen the scheme and provide greater empowerment to the youth involved in the NSS, hence, fostering a more self-reliant future generation.
He further underscored the importance of the legislative change, suggesting that it would lead to improved operations and opportunities within the National Service Scheme and even beyond Africa.
