In a thrilling quarterfinal encounter in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) today, October 17, Keta SHTS ended St. Augustine’s chances of reaching the finals.
Three challenging opponents at the beginning of the competition—Tamale SHS, Keta SHS, and St. Augustine’s College—demonstrated their qualification for that hotly disputed quarter-final spot.
They demonstrated their brilliance in the first round, scoring 20, 19, and 28 points, respectively, laying the foundation for a difficult struggle ahead.
Keta SHTS took the lead with 27 points in the second round despite the tougher opposition, with Tamale SHS and St. Augustine’s trailing with 22 and 17 points, respectively.
The “problem of the day” in round three was equally challenging. Despite scoring three points, Tamale was unable to regain the lead it held before. Keta SHS scored one point, while St Augustine’s earned two.
Keta SHTS maintained its lead as the competition intensified in round three, moving on to the tense true/false round and the challenging riddles of round five.
With 38 points, Keta SHS led the competition. Tamale SHS was close behind with 32 points, while St. Augustine’s finished third with 29 points.
Tamale SHS had performed admirably in the preliminary round, but had trouble with the puzzles, which allowed Keta SHS to respond to more questions and win with 44 points. St. Augustine’s College came in last with 32 points.
The fact that St. Augustine’s College was seeded for the first time in two years nonetheless made history for the college.
This accomplishment enables them to begin next year’s tournament at the eighth level, a feat shared with Tamale SHS. This loss might be a watershed moment in their quest for future NSMQ success.
