The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has revealed that 1,937 persons have lost their lives in road accidents across the country between January and August 2025.
According to the report, there were 16, 348 vehicles involved in the 9,626 reported road accidents within the period. The figure was broken down as follows:
- 5,515 commercial vehicles
- 6,647 private vehicles
- 4,186 motor vehicles.
As a result, there were 10,957 injuries recorded.
These figures were disclosed by the Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) Abraham Amaliba during a familiarisation tour of the Authority by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey.
In the same period last year, the total number of accident cases reported on Ghana’s roads was 8,653, and the total number of vehicles involved in road traffic accidents was 14,654.
That means that there has been a 11.24% increase in the number of road accidents recorded. Similarly, there has been an 11.56 percent jump in the number of vehicles involved in road accidents.
According to Mr Amaliba, speeding was identified as the leading cause of crashes, accounting for over 80% of incidents, with many drivers exceeding limits in both rural and urban areas.
He also pointed to indiscriminate pedestrian activity, such as hawking, alongside poor road engineering and maintenance, as major contributors to the incidents.
It is expected that road safety advocacy, education and implementation of road safety laws will be intensified to reduce the incidence of road accidents on Ghana’s roads.
